" Indian Army has proved that the regimental colours its Jawans carry are still a matter of
honour. The MANY wars it faced, have ensured that those traditions would be carried on by many generations of fighting Jawans in
the years to come. Most of all, the Jawans have learnt that after all was said and done, honour in battle meant
standing one's ground and fighting - even to the last man or tank if necessary. Jai Hind!! Jai
Jawan!!" The Palton The People The Program The Place Nawang belonged to the 4th Battalion of the 3rd Gorkha Rifles. The battalion is the smallest fighting unit in the Army. Many battalions make up a regiment. The Battalion, which is know amongst the Army as the "Palton" has the strongest bonds with an officer. This is his family and the men there are their brothers.Many officers have told us, that what inspires then the most is that the name of the "palton" and the "izzat" of the palton. When in battle it is a matter of honour for a soldier to carry the flags of his regiment with the name of his palton on it. Nawang's unit came to their peace station in Almora in January 2001 after bravely waging wars against the enemy first in the Batalik Sector in Kargil during Operation Vijay and then in Kupwara as part of Operation Rakshak.
