15 August 82 At Serchchip Or ( A day in The Life of an Assam Rifles CO )

The below is a battle-balad, based on a true to life battle-experience of Lt. Col A.K. 'Sam' Sharma, on 15 aug 1982, when he was commanding 19 Asam Rifles in Mizoram. The battalion was deployed for active counter insurgency operations, with its head quarters in Serchchip, having its companies/ wings deployed leaning on the Burma border. Its main role was to capture or kill the hostiles of the so called Mizoram National Army (MNA, the strong arm of the MNF; the Mizoram National Front). In the incident described in the battle-ballad, he was rescuing a detachment of the Pioneers; guarding the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) camp; from the marauding drunk dumka civil labourers, who had surrounded the BRTF camp and killed some as also suffering a number of casualties themselves when the Pioneer defenders fired in self defence.

Steel grey Thinglian, Rullam and Tawitlang were

Lt. Col A.K. 'Sam' Sharma

Sam Sharma is 4/3 Gorkha Officers, who was the original Bronco. This poem, as well as Buzzard Feast are based on exploits of the broncos in the 1965 war with Pakistan; actually a raid on a Pakistani post, on the Line of Control. He is a regular visitor to the site and a great supporter.
